Hawks sign former Spurs center Basilisk to strengthen interior rotation

September 11th news, the Atlanta Hawks recently made a low-key move and signed former San Antonio Spurs center Charles Brazil, offering him an Exhibit 10 contract .

The contract allows the Hawks to bring Brazil to training camp, where he has the opportunity to compete for a regular roster spot, sign a two-way contract, or even join the Hawks' Development League team, which means Brazil will at least have a stage to continue to prove himself.

Bassey was a top-10 prospect in the 2018 class. During his three years at Western Kentucky University, he earned two C-USA All-NBA honors and twice led the league in field goal percentage. He was selected 53rd overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2021 NBA Draft. Although he was waived after playing just 23 games in his rookie season, he was soon signed by the Spurs to a two-way contract before the 2022-23 season, which he eventually converted to a standard contract.

Over three seasons in San Antonio, Bassey played in 90 games, including three starts. Despite limited opportunities, he showed promise in post-up play and rim protection, and his numbers suggest he was highly efficient. However, the Spurs' young roster struggled to establish a consistent role.

Now joining the Atlanta Hawks, Bassey faces a new challenge. He's expected to compete for the backup center role behind Okongwu. As he approaches 25, he's at a crucial stage in his career. If he can demonstrate his energy and defensive value in training camp, Bassey could find a niche with the Hawks.
