Sergio Ramos in talks with Monterrey over possible move

Former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos is in talks with Mexican club Monterrey over a possible transfer.

According to Mexican media RG Deportiva, Ramos is willing to accept a contract with an annual salary of about $4 million. However, the two sides disagreed on the performance bonus clause, and the former Spanish international hoped that the contract would include relevant incentive clauses. In addition, the contract period is also a key point of contention in the negotiations - Ramos' team hopes to reach a two-year contract, while Monterrey is only willing to offer a one-year contract.

Antonio Noriega, president of Monterrey, confirmed in an interview with ESPN that Ramos is indeed one of the targets the club is considering.

"He is definitely on our wish list and a realistic option, but there are other possibilities. As always in negotiations, there are all kinds of possibilities, everything is possible. Yes, (negotiations) are ongoing, but there are still final details to be finalized."

"I will not reveal the details of the specific contract terms, there is no point. We have multiple options for signings."

This is not the first time Ramos has been linked with a club outside of Europe. Last summer, the former Real Madrid defender was rumoured to be in talks with MLS side San Diego for a move, but no deal was reached.

Ramos came through the youth system at Sevilla and made a high-profile move to Real Madrid in 2005. During his 16 years at the Bernabéu, he established himself as one of the world's top defenders and captained Real Madrid to four Champions League titles and five La Liga titles. After leaving Real Madrid in 2021, Ramos moved to Paris Saint-Germain and won two Ligue 1 titles with the team before returning to Sevilla for a short time in 2023.

If Monterrey fails to sign Ramos, the club is ready to seek other defensive targets. It is reported that Spanish defenders Carlos Cuesta and Mateo Gamara have been included in the team's recruitment list in case of emergency. However, the club's top priority is still to sign the experienced central defender.
