Al-Ettifaq announced on its official website on Thursday that former Liverpool and England legendary captain Steven Gerrard has resigned as head coach.
According to Al-Ettifaq's official statement, the club is very grateful for Gerrard's efforts for the team in the past and wishes him good luck in the future.
Former head coach Saad Al-Shehri will also return to the club as its new head coach. It is still unknown whether Gerrard's assistant coaching staff will also leave the team.
In addition, although Gerrard issued a statement after leaving the club to thank Al-Ettifaq for giving him the opportunity to coach the club, however, the Liverpool ECHO exclusively revealed that the relationship between the two sides has actually reached a breaking point.
According to reports, Gerrard was actually frustrated that Al-Ettifaq did not fully support his ideas in player recruitment. Even the promise to provide him with funds to recruit players during this winter transfer window was not fulfilled. In addition, the team's performance was getting worse and worse, thuse he was exhausted and eventually chose to resign.
Although he has decided to leave Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard has not been able to return to England immediately due to release clause, tax settlement and other issues.
Currently, it is still unknown whether Gerrard will return to Liverpool and join head coach Arne Slot's assistant coaching staff after returning to England.
During his nearly two-year spell as the head coach of Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard coached the Saudi Pro League club in 59 games across all competitions, winning 23 times, drawing 16 times and lost 10 times.
