Manchester City, nicknamed the "Citizens," took the lead in a key match of the 21st round of the 2025/26 Premier League season thanks to a penalty from Haaland, but conceded a goal in the second half and were ultimately held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton, nicknamed the "Seagulls." Manchester City striker Doku stated that his team struggled due to missed opportunities and should have been more efficient in scoring.
In the 37th minute, Doku was brought down in the penalty area by Diego Gomez, and after VAR intervention, the referee awarded Manchester City a penalty. Haaland then converted the penalty, giving Manchester City a 1-0 lead.
In the 60th minute of the second half, Yassin Ayari dribbled past the defense and passed the ball across the box. Kaoru Mitoma received the pass and broke through to the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a long-range shot that found the back of the net, leveling the score at 1-1 for Brighton.
Manchester City were ultimately held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton at the Etihad Stadium. After two wins and three draws in their last five matches, Manchester City currently sit second in the league table with 43 points, six points behind leaders Arsenal.
"We are very disappointed. We really wanted to win this game, and we did have chances to win, so everyone is disappointed. We had very clear scoring opportunities, and if we had just capitalized on them, the game would have been much easier," said 23-year-old Doku.
"It's frustrating because the problem isn't with the opponents, it's with ourselves. We wasted some chances and then put ourselves in a difficult position. It's entirely our own problem, so it's especially frustrating because we know we could have done better in terms of goal-scoring efficiency."
Doku pointed out, "We do have some key players out, but that's no excuse. I think there are players on the field and on the bench who are capable of winning games for us. We are certainly waiting for our teammates to return, but in the meantime, the existing players must step up and take responsibility."
Regarding the standings, Doku said, "We haven't paid much attention to the standings; we've just focused on ourselves and trying to win the games. In the end, we'll see where we are."
In addition, when talking about his 20-year-old teammate Allain, Doku said, "He performed very well. He only practiced with us once, but he looked very confident in the game, and I am very happy with his good performance."
