Queiroz has officially been appointed as the head coach of Ghana and will lead the team in this summer's World Cup.

The Ghana Football Federation (GFA) announced on Monday that Carlos Queiroz has been appointed as the national team coach, effective immediately. He will take over from Otto Addo and lead the team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

However, the announcement did not mention Queiroz's specific term with the Ghanaian national team. According to sources, this appointment is a short-term arrangement. Queiroz is expected to coach Ghana until the end of the World Cup, after which both sides will conduct a further evaluation.

The 73-year-old Queiroz has coached numerous national teams, including Portugal (twice), Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Iran (twice), Colombia, Egypt, Qatar, and Oman. His most representative achievement on the international stage is leading different teams to the World Cup finals five times (2002, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022), and guiding Egypt to the runner-up position in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021.

At the club level, Queiroz managed Sporting CP, Tohoku Metropolitan Stars, Nagoya Grampus, and Real Madrid, leading them to one Portuguese Cup, one Portuguese Super Cup, and one Spanish Super Cup. He also served twice as an assistant coach at Manchester United, assisting then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Following the signing, Queiroz stated in a press release: "With deep gratitude to the Ghana Football Federation, a strong sense of responsibility, and humility, I embark on a new chapter with the Ghanaian national team. Football has given me a lifetime of challenges, lessons, and unforgettable journeys around the world. Today, I accept this mission with the passion and dedication that has characterized my entire career."

“Ghana is a nation brimming with talent, pride, and the spirit of football. I come here with respect for Ghana’s history and confidence in its future. We will unite, be disciplined, and ambitious to meet the expectations of this football powerhouse. This is not just a job, but a mission. I am ready to once again dedicate my experience and knowledge to serving Ghana’s football and the well-being of its people.”

According to the schedule, Ghana will play its first World Cup match in Toronto, Canada on June 17. Their opponents are Panama, England, and Croatia, all in Group L.
