Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca realised how important the win over Southampton was to the team after admitting the team was at its worst point of the season.
Although Southampton was full of fighting spirit at the beginning and constantly created threats for the opponent in the counterattack, Chelsea finally lived up to expectations and defeated Southampton 4-0 to win the game.
Chelsea completely dominated the second half and could have had more goals, this one from Marc Cucurella following a fine play from academy graduate Tyrique George.
Enzo Maresca said: "This win was important for us because we know that every game from now on is important. We are happy to get the three points and we will be at the top. However, if we lose this game to Southampton, we will drop a little bit in the rankings."
"Admittedly, we are very happy with the performance. However, we also played well against Aston Villa, but we just didn't win.
Prior to the win over Southampton, Chelsea had lost away to Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion, having won just two of our previous ten Premier League games.
Manager Enzo Maresca admitted this was Chelsea's worst moment of the season, but he believes the fact that our team are still fourth, just one point behind Nottingham Forest in third, is testament to how well we have performed in the early stages of the season.
Enzo Maresca also said: "I just told the players that we are at the worst moment in terms of results. However, we are currently fourth in the standings, only one point away from third place. This means that we have performed well in the first half of the season, and now we just have to work hard to end the game in the best way possible."
