RB Leipzig issued a statement on Sunday, announcing that head coach Marco Rose was officially dismissed. Three assistant coaches Alexander Ziegler, Marco Kurt, Frank Geidek, and first-team football director Frank Ahrig will also leave with Rose.
Marco Rose, 48, has coached Lokomotiv Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Dortmund and other teams, and led the team to win two Austrian Super League titles and one Austrian Cup. He succeeded Domenico Tedesco as the head of Red Bull Leipzig in September 2022. During his tenure, he led the team to a record of 72 wins, 22 draws and 33 losses, and won the German Cup and the German Super Cup.
Although Rose has had a good record in the past, RB Leipzig's performance this season has caused management to doubt its ability: Leipzig only won 1 and lost 5 in the Champions League in January this year, and finally ranked fifth from the bottom with 3 points. Their performance in the Bundesliga also failed to meet expectations. After 27 rounds, they have 11 wins, 9 draws and 7 losses, and have 42 points. They are currently ranked sixth.
Regarding the decision to fire Rose, Leipzig's general manager of sports Marcel Schäfer explained: "We have long believed in the cooperation with Marco and his team and have done our best to turn the situation around together. In view of the current development situation and the continued poor results, we all firmly believe that we need to inject new impetus into the remaining games of this season to achieve our goals."
“I would like to thank Marco and his coaching team for their dedication over the past two and a half years, the success they have achieved with us and their contribution to the club.”
Jorge Loew
RB Leipzig also announced that Rose's successor is 45-year-old Hungarian Jolt Loew. He will coach Leipzig until the end of this season and will start training with the team tomorrow. Peter Krautz, 53, will serve as his assistant coach.
Jolt Loew has served as an assistant coach at Levlin, Red Bull Salzburg, Red Bull Leipzig, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, during which time he assisted Adi Hütter, Ralph Hasenhüttl, Ralf Rangnick and Thomas Tuchel in winning 1 Austrian Super League title, 1 Austrian Cup title, 2 Ligue 1 titles, 1 French Cup title, 1 French League Cup title, 2 French Super Cup titles, 1 Champions League title and 1 Bundesliga title. However, he has been unemployed since leaving Bayern with Tuchel in June last year.
After completing the signing, Marcel Schäfer said: "Zolt Löw has everything we need to quickly turn the situation around and improve the team's performance: rich experience, a successful record at top European clubs, and the right coaching philosophy. Now, the team needs to work with Zolt to overcome difficulties. At the same time, we are looking for a long-term coach for the 2025/26 season."
Jolt Löw then added: "We are fully focused on the remaining nine games of the season. We still have a chance to achieve our goals in both competitions. We will do our best to qualify for the German Cup final and do well in the Bundesliga." He will lead the team to the Neckar Stadium next Wednesday to compete with Stuttgart for a place in the German Cup final.
