UEFA's Ethics and Disciplinary Committee formally warned Manchester City and Real Madrid on its official website on Saturday that if the fans of both clubs retaliate against each other again in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout stage match, the authorities may impose fines on both sides and partial closure of some stands in their stadiums.
According to UEFA's official statement, since Real Madrid fans deliberately chanted homophobic slogans at Manchester City's head coach, it is a more serious act of discrimination and ridicule, so the punishment for Los Blancos may be higher than that of the Cityzens' fans.
If Real Madrid fans chant disgusting slogans again in retaliation towards Manchester City fans, UEFA's Ethics and Disciplinary Committee may fine Los Blancos €31,000, plus a partial closure of some stands in their stadium which will be suspended of 2 years.
In addition, Manchester City was also warned by the UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee for hanging a photo of Rodri kissing the Ballon d'Or in the stadium with a large banner that read "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" to mock Vinicius Junior as an initiative to provoke a fight. If similar behaviour occurs again, the authorities may impose a fine of €20,000 on the club, plus a a partial closure of some stands in their stadium which will be suspended of 2 years.
This controversial incident occurred earlier in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout stage match between the two clubs.
At that time, some of Manchester City's "We are 1894" fan organizations deliberately hung a large banner with a photo of Rodri kissing the Ballon d'Or and "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" on the stands on one side of the stadium.
Although this banner obviously has a strong provocative meaning of mocking Vinicius Junior, the "We are 1894" fan organization still denies it.
The group insisted that the banner was in retaliation for Real Madrid president Florentino Perez's decision to have all the club's players and staff not attend the awards ceremony in protest of Vinicius not winning the Ballon d'Or.
Nearly 500 Real Madrid fans were unhappy with the controversial banner and chanted homophobic slogans at Pep Guardiola in retaliation against Manchester City fans.
